BACKGROUND

Powering over 225,000 South Island homes and businesses across 8,000 square kilometres, Inde’s client - a key electricity network utility provider - found themselves struggling to maintain IT operations. Both their infrastructure and service delivery team were overwhelmed by the pressures of growth and day to day problem solving, leaving little time for strategic planning or forward-thinking projects.

A GROWING CHALLENGE

As the business' workforce grew to nearly 600 employees, the small IT team became stretched thin, juggling routine tasks like onboarding and offboarding, troubleshooting, maintenance, and day-to-day support. As the demands increased, it became clear they needed a smarter, more strategic approach to managing their IT operations. That's when Inde stepped in.

“Our client was growing rapidly, and their IT team and processes weren’t keeping up. We saw the opportunity to guide and work with them to move them from reactive fixes to building a more strategic and resilient IT foundation.” said Steve Gooch, Delivery Management Director at Inde.

LAYING THE FOUNDATIONS FOR SUCCESS

Over the course of a year, Inde worked closely with the client’s project management, infrastructure, and service delivery teams to provide visibility of risks, gaps, and opportunities related to their infrastructure, systems, processes, and workflows. Based on this work, and through a series of collaborative workshops, Inde and the client’s team partnered together to identify, prioritise, and size the key projects needed to support their evolving business outcomes. Together, they developed a clear roadmap to ensure a seamless, efficient transformation.

BUILDING A FUTURE-READY IT STRATEGY

With a strategic foundation in place, Inde created and ran a programme of work to deliver the agreed outcomes. The execution of work relied on both parties – the client had limited resources but were responsible for to providing company knowledge; governance and decision making; and review and approval of projects, designs and solutions. To allow the work to progress rapidly Inde deployed its specialised teams to tackle specific areas of improvement:

  • Workspace Automation: Inde’s Workspace Team automated routine tasks like system updates and end-2-end device management, using tools like Autopilot and InTune. This reduced downtime and freed the client’s IT team to focus on more high-impact projects.
  • Security Enhancements: Inde’s Security Team implemented disaster recovery policies and ensured critical systems were safeguarded, reducing the risk of disruptions.
  • Cloud Modernisation: The Cloud Team migrated the client to Microsoft 365 and Exchange, modernising their IT infrastructure and improving control over their operational technology.
  • Proactive Monitoring: With the help of LogicMonitor, the Enterprise and Managed Services Team introduced proactive IT monitoring. This helped identify issues before they escalated, allowing the team to shift from reactive problem-solving to proactive improvements.
  • Process Automation: Inde’s Integration and Automation Team automated HR processes, significantly streamlining onboarding and offboarding tasks.

THE NEXT STEPS

Since implementing these monitoring and proactive tasks, the client’s IT team have been able to move away from being bogged down by routine fixes and focus on driving innovation and supporting the company’s growth.

Inde continues to support the client through its Managed Services Team, ensuring they can anticipate and address challenges before they become critical issues.

The project has enabled the client to move their IT strategy from a reactive day-to-day focus to forward planning and innovation.
